We study A Passage to India and Our Town, have Philosophy with Mrs. Seah; try to become true-blue geographers who learn ridiculously weird things like Wadati-Benioff zones and orogenesis OR try to become swastika-hating historians who learn about the Bolsheviks and Lenin!

Science questions
Monday, March 29, 2010
Aim of this exercise is to ask questions about science, whether it is the discipline of science, the use of science, the R&D, the future… Ask these questions so that we will be informed by this knowledge of asking all these questions, so that we may more properly and more coherently address issues in the SRQ.

When you give us your question, you guys think about those questions in relation to your article, refine it further and put it together. Call out and Esther will write it down.

1. Lauren: What is the nature of science? (Ms Teng: Is science neutral? What is the objectivity and subjectivity of science?)
2. Nicole: Is investing in military research necessarily a bad thing?
3. Celine: How do you measure the truth in science?
4. Jean: Must there be a purpose when pursuing technology?
5. Michelle: Should technology work within social boundaries?
6. Joyan: Does technology have tangible benefits for mankind?
7. Crystal: Is there a need for humanity to catch up with the progression of science?
8. Hyolim: Are humanitarian concerns more important that a country’s security?
9. Joyan: Should there be a common aim for the pursuit of science? (Common = suggests an international agreement or standard.)
10. Kylie: How much influence/ say does the public have in scientific research?
11. Michelle: Do scientists have a responsibility towards the progression of humanity? (Nicole: Is the progress of science impeding the progress of humanity?)
12. Crystal: Where do the loyalties of a scientist lie? With humankind or with science? (YX: Should scientists be affected by their personal values and ethics when making important decisions for science?)
13. Charis: Is the Hippocratic Oath still relevant today?
14. Simhwee: Should science be about advancement at any cost? (How do you measure/ judge the value of science?)
15. Linsha: What are the impacts of scientific developments on human rights?
16. Hyolim: Is there a way to ensure that science is purely for good? What are the checks and balances that we currently have on scientific development?
17. Yuxin: Who should be responsible for ‘bad decisions’? Is it the scientist’s fault that destructive power and profit are the major priorities driving application of science today?
18. Crystal: What is the duty of a scientist?
19. Jean: Who is to judge whether we are progressing too fast?
20. Crystal: Why are there conflicts between ethics and science?
21. Huiqi: Why do we always argue over morals, when it is our intentions that should be questioned?
22. Jean: Who has the most say in deciding the direction of science? Government? People with money? The intellectual community? The end user?
23. Ms Teng: What are some controversies that have arisen out of scientific research?
24. Ms Teng: Is the work of a scientist more valuable than that of an artist? Think about the emphasis schools are placing on science and education, and the prestige that comes with the study of science.

Go home and research, so that you are equipped for the panel discussion.
